Ann Coffey

Coffey was a social worker before becoming an MP for Stockport in 1992, having studied a Master of Science at Manchester in psychiatric social work. Coffey spearheaded the report into child exploitation in the wake of Rochdale. The report, titled ‘Real Voices – are they being heard?’, put young people’s own testimonies for the first time at the centre of the inquiry, using their own experiences to find a solution to exploitation. The report recommended widespread training in spotting the signs of abuse, both for police and other members of the community such as park attendants, and the development of a proper management strategy similar to those used for obesity or smoking.
