Heidi Allen
Before becoming the Conservative MP for South Cambridgeshire in 2015, Allen was as an astrophysicist graduate with 18 years of experience in business. Allen made an impression from her maiden speech, which she used to criticise her own party’s proposed cuts to tax credits. She accused the government of ‘naivety’ in believing that low-paid workers could make up the loss of income simply by working extra hours. Although she ended up voting through the government’s bill, it was eventually defeated by 317 votes. She has also consistently backed giving local governments greater autonomy.
